Global Perspectives

iEARN

iEARN (International Education and Resource Network) is a collaborate project network with participation in over 140 countries.  This allows students and learners all over the world to connect with each other using the Internet and technology.  There is a variety of educational projects to encourage meaningful learning.  These projects can be integrated into the classroom and help create global citizens.

 

National Geographic Education

National Geographic Education has a wealth of resources with a variety of medias to help students stay engaged with what is happening in the world.  There are up to date news stories and educational programs across many different subjects (from animals to ecosystems to food).  It is a very hands on website that even has different ways to get involved.  There are even different activities and games that students can explore over all different subjects and topics of interest.

 

Smithsonian Education

Smithsonian Education has a place for students to explore and learn.  There are a variety of topics to explore like arts, science and nature, history and culture, and people and places.  The Smithsonian offers many interactive games and activities for students to explore at home.  For students who are not able to go on a field trip to the Smithsonian – there are interactive field trips that the students can take from their classroom.

 

Geographic Literacy

 

Roots and Shoots Community Mapping

In order to know how and where to make a difference, you must first be aware of your environment.  Mapping your community allows you to become more familiar with human, animal, and environmental factors.  Community mapping helps you make a difference.

 

Touchable Earth

Touchable Earth helps children teach other children.  Children learn about life around the world by hearing and seeing it from other children.  It also has an app available that is very child friendly!

 

Kid World Citizen

Kid World Citizen allows students to map and follow where their food comes from.  Tracking your food allows you to see how much really goes into you buying something from the store.  Children can see the human, environment, and animal cost.

 

Sustainability

 

Loop Scoops

Loop Scoops is a PBS program that has cartoons about a variety of different things.  It is the 'story of stuff.'  These short cartoons let kids think about live and the environment and how they interact.

 

Ollie's World

Ollie's world teaches kids about living a sustainable life.  It teaches kid about the 4 Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rethink!  The 5 action issues these concepts are applied to are - waste, water, energy, air, and biodiversity.

 

Planet Pals

Planet pals includes teacher resources, free printables, coloring pages, and activity books.  It has a variety of resources to use to promote sustainability.  The planet pals teach kids to be 'healthy inside and out.'

 

Social Justice and Human Rights

 

Discover Human Rights

Discover Human Rights is run by the advocates for human rights.  They help promote and protect human rights in the school and community.  There are lesson plans, toolkits, newsletters, and presentations on human rights for teachers.

 

Teaching Tolerance

Teaching Tolerance supports diversity, equal opportunity, and respect for differences in schools.  There is a wealth of classroom resources and film kits.  It also has an archive of Teaching Tolerance magazines.

 

So Just

So Just has primary source documents.  This includes historical speeches, songs, poetry, and essays on social justice and human rights.  It also has links to other historical websites.
